Namibia - Home to Africas Biggest Leopards
Traditional Namibia has consistently produced Africas biggest leopards on a regular basis due to Namibias outstanding efforts in the insurance of correct and strategic management plans. Namibia is one of the only African countries that practice the statistic based tag issuing system. A few other important factors that contribute to the quality of Namibian leopards are the fact that it has the lowest human population density in Southern Africa. On average, the largest game farms in Africa, the largest population of leopards per capita, the strictest management regulations, and endless numbers of prey species. On top of all of this Frontier Safaris has some of the best Leopards Namibia has to offer and this may be due to their prestige location. Frontier Safaris is only 14 miles from Namibias largest national parks Etosha witch is home to Namibias largest density of Leopard, not only are they close to Etosha they have two mountain ranges running through the farm covered in thick mopani forest, the ultimate habitat for producing big Leopards, besides the excellent habitat Frontier Safaris ranch is surrounded by 5 cattle farms and no other hunting ranches meaning there’s endless supply of easy prey for the leopards and a sanctuary created by Frontier Safaris right in the middle. The ultimate Leopard paradise except for 14 days out the whole year, yet Frontier Safaris has set up a very strict management plan only harvesting one mature male Leopard a year on their over 45,000 acre private ranch.
Leopard Hunting Over Bait
Baiting is the most popular method of hunting Leopards throughout Africa. To ensure the most success when baiting leopards there are two main factors you need to take into consideration. First being how warm is it at the time of the hunt. Second being how much natural pray is in the area at the time. Africa can get hot, very hot during its summer months and heat doesn’t go well with baiting as the heat makes the bait rot too fast. For this reason, the best time to bait leopards is during our colder and dryer winter months June, July and August. Also, during this time of the year, our plains game species are not calving making our bait much more appealing. Baiting will usually start weeks if not months before the client arrives for his safari and will continue throughout his safari. Bait hunting leopards is the ultimate African safari and requires skill, patience and a fair amount of luck. Never easy, a leopard is always a well earned trophy.
Predator Calling Leopards
Although not the most common way to hunt leopards, predator calling can be an alternative to baiting and successful at times. Predator calling is most successful when leopards are on the hunt for pray in the early mornings and late evenings. The best time of the year to call in leopards is when there are not as many natural pray around during the months of June, July and August. Although you might entice a number of other predators into the caller before you get a chance at a leopard, if there’s a leopard in the area, odds are he’ll come into the call. In addition, Leopards need to drink water on a daily basis and every now and again, they are spotted during daylight hours coming into watering holes for a drink. Although the least common and requiring the most luck, every so often, leopards are hunted out of opportunity.

At Frontier Safaris Namibia, we are proud of our conservation efforts we setup over 12 years ago ensuring our ranch would become the ultimate leopard hunting destination. Leopard hunting is never easy even at the best of times. That’s why we recommend such a short season window to our clients. Our season runs from April through the end of October, but the best time of the season to hunt leopards is June, July and August. Leopard hunts will consist of a minimum of 14 hunting days to ensure adequate opportunities to locate a big cat, setup a blind, and plan out a couple days to hunt. Allow for a travel day on arrival and a travel day on departure resulting in a total of 16 days but longer hunts are always available and most welcome. It’s no secret leopards have the most successful payback ratio once wounded. Incorrect shot placement is certainly the main culprit because hunters are shooting them with too big of a gun and flinching because of fear of recoil.
